World's Largest Portable Dome

The Celestial Dome — 235-ft to 900-ft Configurations

Nothing portable comes close. The Celestial is the world's largest inflatable video projection dome — with a combined interior and exterior projection surface 70 times larger than a single IMAX screen. Deployed for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and Universal Studios Florida — serving millions of visitors annually for five consecutive years. Standard configuration 235ft (72m). Configurations available to 900ft (274m) — exceeding Al Wasl Plaza Dubai by over 470 feet.

The standard Celestial configuration at 235ft (72m) delivers 43,373 sq ft (4,030 m²) of clear-span floor space for 8,000+ guests. Scale to 900ft (274m) and floor space approaches nearly 200,000 sq ft (18,547 m²) for 25,000+ guests — the largest deployable projection dome configuration engineered and available anywhere in the world. The Celestial Dome is an air-supported inflatable structure requiring no cranes, no scaffolding, and no permanent foundation — suitable for temporary, semi-permanent, and permanent installation. It transports by land, sea, or air to any location worldwide and sets up in 4 days (dome only). Projection system installation is scheduled separately. A geodesic dome of equivalent size would weigh over one million pounds — the Celestial arrives faster, at a fraction of the logistics cost, and sets up without cranes.

The world's first portable video projection dome was invented by Absolute Hollywood in 1999 — first deployed at the Sands Convention Center LDI Conference in Las Vegas in 2000, then MGM Grand and Luxor. That is 23 years before the Vegas Sphere opened in September 2023. That head start shows in every deployment.

The Marvel Experience

Seven interconnected projection domes — 2014 to 2015

The Marvel Experience deployed seven interconnected Absolute Hollywood projection domes as a single touring campus — the largest multi-dome touring activation ever produced. The SHIELD-branded complex combined Celestial-class projection domes for the primary immersive fulldome show with StratoSphere and Galactic projection domes for adjacent activation zones, all linked by custom connector corridors.

Absolute Hollywood designed, fabricated, installed, maintained, and operated all dome structures throughout the tour, and managed dome strike and packing between cities. The campus toured Houston, San Jose, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Toronto from 2014 to 2015, delivering immersive experiences to hundreds of thousands of guests.

Six cities — two StratoSpheres — two continents simultaneously

To promote Athens as a world-class tourism destination, the Government of Greece commissioned Absolute Hollywood to deploy two StratoSphere projection domes on a six-city international tour spanning Europe and North America simultaneously. The tour visited Athens, London, Paris, Berlin, New York, and Chicago.

The operational achievement was extraordinary: while one StratoSphere ran its Thursday through Saturday schedule in Berlin, the second ran the same schedule in New York4,000 miles (6,400 km) apart — without missing a single performance. The two-continent simultaneous operation demonstrated a logistics and production capability unmatched in the industry.

Understanding Dome Types

What Is a Geodesic Projection Dome?

A geodesic dome is a rigid structure built from a network of interlocking triangular steel or aluminum elements forming a hemispherical shell. First popularized by architect Buckminster Fuller in the mid-20th century, geodesic domes have been used for planetariums, event venues, and temporary structures worldwide.

Many people searching for projection domes use the word "geodesic" as a general term for any large dome — often without realizing that modern inflatable projection domes have made geodesic structures largely obsolete for event applications above 60 feet (18 meters) in diameter.

For events requiring scale, speed, portability, and immersive visual quality, inflatable projection domes consistently outperform geodesic structures across every practical dimension. Absolute Hollywood deploys both — and has the experience to recommend the right solution for every project.

Quick Answer

How Big Are Projection Domes?

Absolute Hollywood projection domes range from 30 to 235+ feet (9 to 72+ meters) in diameter — the widest range of any portable projection dome company in the world. The smallest deployable dome is 30 feet (9 meters). The flagship Celestial Dome starts at 235ft (72m) in diameter with 43,373 sq ft (4,030 m²) of floor space and capacity for 8,000+ guests — and scales to 900ft (274m) with floor space approaching nearly 200,000 sq ft (18,547 m²) for 25,000+ guests. No other portable dome company in the world can deploy projection domes at this scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions most commonly asked about projection domes.

How much does it cost to rent a projection dome?

Projection dome pricing depends on dome size, event duration, location, content production requirements, and the level of turnkey service needed. A single-day StratoSphere activation differs significantly from a multi-day Celestial Dome deployment with full custom fulldome content production. Absolute Hollywood provides bespoke pricing for every engagement — no two events are identical. Contact the team directly with your event date, location, dome size preference, and expected attendance for a tailored quote.

How big are inflatable projection domes?

Absolute Hollywood inflatable projection domes range from 30 to 235+ feet (9 to 72+ meters) in diameter. The Celestial Dome is the world's largest — standard configuration at 235ft (72m) with 43,373 sq ft (4,030 m²) of floor space and 8,000+ guests capacity. Configurations extend to 900ft (274m) with floor space approaching nearly 200,000 sq ft (18,547 m²) for 25,000+ guests. The StratoSphere is 60 feet (19 meters) with 3,000 sq ft (279 m²) of interior floor space. The Galactic projection domes range from 65 to 160+ feet (20 to 49+ meters) across five configurations.

How long does it take to set up a projection dome?

Setup time is measured from the start of installation to the dome inflated and ready to enter. The StratoSphere sets up in 1 day. Galactic projection domes from 65 to 160+ feet take 1 to 3 days (dome only). The Celestial Dome at 235ft (72m) sets up in 4 days (dome only). Projection system installation, audio configuration, and interior buildout are scheduled separately and depend on show requirements. When event schedules demand it, Absolute Hollywood can condense the timeline — 26 years of deployment experience means we have solved every scheduling challenge imaginable. All projection domes transport by land, sea, or air and deploy without cranes.

What happens to a projection dome in a storm?

Absolute Hollywood projection domes are engineered to meet or exceed the specific wind load requirements of each deployment location. Every dome is fully weatherproof and operates across a temperature range of −40°F to 140°F (−40°C to 60°C). In real-world conditions, AH projection domes have been deployed on snowpack at −20°F (−29°C) in Vermont during a Mountain Dew product launch while actively snowing, through desert sandstorms with recorded winds of 83 knots (approximately 155 km/h), and through Arctic ice storms — across 26 years of operation in 33+ countries. Interior air pressure is adjustable to counter increasing external wind loads. Weather-related event cancellations have not occurred.

What is the difference between inflatable projection domes and geodesic domes?

A geodesic dome is a rigid structure built from interlocking steel or aluminum triangles. Inflatable projection domes are air-supported structures with a seamless hemispherical fabric membrane. For projection events the differences are significant: inflatable projection domes scale to 235ft to 900ft (72m to 274m) while geodesic structures become extremely challenging above 60 feet (18 meters) — requiring cranes, extended installation timelines of 2 weeks or more, and a calm wind window just to install the cover fabric. A 160-foot geodesic dome involves over one million pounds of steel and 12 sea containers. Inflatable projection domes of comparable size set up in 1 to 3 days without cranes and deliver a completely seamless projection surface — producing a superior fulldome immersive experience. Learn more about geodesic dome rental options.
